Stress, anxiety and poor sleep affect people in many different ways. For some it feels like constant worry. For others it shows up as exhaustion, irritability, tension, digestive issues or trouble switching off at night.
They often occur together, and can really wear a person down, becoming particularly irritating when you are already stretched to your limit.
It affects the body, through stomach issues or palpitations, and the mind, through panic or shifting emotions. It can touch your relationships with the people around you, too.
Often a result of a deeper issue, it tends to be what happens when life asks more of us than we can comfortably give.
Sometimes life’s circumstances can’t change. Often people come to acupuncture because they know something isn’t quite right, but they struggle to find the time or space to resolve their needs.
Acupuncture can be a useful source of support during these periods, helping some people feel more settled and better able to meet life’s pressures.
Here are some things which I have heard described:
Some people know exactly what’s behind their stress, anxiety or poor sleep: work, family worries or other health issues. Others need time to unpick the causes.
Either way, stress doesn’t appear out of nowhere.
I look at the holistic picture. In our first session I take a full history and gently assess the body by touch. I’ll ask about your health and lifestyle, and what might be having an impact.
Understanding how sleep, work, relationships, food, exercise and emotional pressures affect you helps guide treatment towards balance.
These factors build a picture of how stress is affecting the individual, and how treatment can best support them.
Modern life often values constant activity, yet recovery is just as important as effort.
Chinese philosophy values the spaces between things: the silence between notes, the pause between breaths, the rest that allows renewal.
For many people, a treatment session offers a rare opportunity to slow down, listen and reconnect with themselves. Acupuncture can be one tool that supports this process.
My approach is always gentle. I support patients through a time of pressure to help them regulate themselves and allow them to work towards balance. When people are stressed or exhausted, the answer is rarely to push harder.
In the session I aim to create space for the body to settle, recover and regain some of its natural resilience. I do this by focusing on nourishment and restoration. Over a few sessions I learn more about each person’s needs, and may recommend dietary improvements or a movement practice which may be supportive.
Moving from overwhelmed to centred and calm takes time, and depends on what’s going on in your life. Stress and poor sleep often build up over years, so I’d expect at least six sessions before you notice a change.
We’ll talk this through in your first consultation.
If stress, anxiety or poor sleep are wearing you down and you’re curious whether acupuncture could support you, I’d be delighted to hear from you.
